Chlorine Dioxide has been approved for use by the FDA, USDA, EPA, and CDC.

CDO gas is used in post-harvest handling for the direct treatment of fruits, vegetables and nuts during storage, transportation and food preparation applications to reduce spoilage and pathogenic organisms with no requirement for post treatment rinse. CDO acts as a killing agent of pathogenic organisms.”
“Chlorine dioxide and chlorite are strong oxidizing agents used as drinking water disinfectants and to bleach textile and wood pulp for paper manufacturing. In general, human ingestion studies have found no adverse effects in adults and neonates living in areas with chlorine dioxide-disinfected water”
